Surely if the US military comprised 100% women, the Pentagon could lowed the wage bill to 79% :-(

Stu--One would think! As you surely know, the US military (and, eventually other Federal governmental agencies) have been the bastions in leading the charge into equal rights for "minorities". I marvel at the audacity of Pres Lincoln and was alive to appreciate the audacity of Pres Truman contemporaneously.

That said, I left the US Navy Reserves in 1986, never having been issued a full set of uniforms. They did not approve steel-toed shoes for females while I served, AFAIK. Since I outranked him, I was able to cajole the Storeman into issuing me a pair of SeaBee boots as part of my work outfit (dungarees and chambray shirt) when he informed me that steel-toed shoes were not approved for females. I must admit that it got even MY attention when first they came out with maternity uniforms!

That is a funny one Stu.
With 50 women serving on a ship with 600 men, maternity uniforms are actually pretty common.
I think women should have to register if we really want things be "equal".
