The carnage could have been so much worse, bad enough as it was.

"...to tame the savageness of man and make gentle the life of the world." If only.....someday .....meanwhile we keep trying.

Hattie--I had no thought of Boston in this posting. It is a general commentary on the current state of the world.

Joared--Yes, we do keep trying.

All--Serendipitously, Stu quoted the fictitious Hogfather (from a book by the same name) in a comment on his own blog (link is in right-hand sidebar). "Take the universe and grind it down to the finest powder, and sieve it through the finest sieve, and then show me one atom of justice, one molecule of mercy. And yet, you try to act as if there is some ideal order in the world. As if there is some, some rightness in the universe, by which it may be judged."

My take-away on that quote is that we are fooling ourselves if we think the universe is more biased toward our own version of "good" - or - that "good" really has a meaning in the real world.
